The PECT is an employer-sponsored IKECA designation exam: 50 open-book multiple-choice questions with a three-hour cumulative limit, a 90-day testing window, and a 70% passing score, based on NFPA 96 and OSHA regulations. Prepare through your employer's Examination Guide sessions, and pace your sessions against the 180-minute cap.

What the PECT designation is, and what it is not

The Professional Exhaust Cleaning Technician (PECT) designation is a member-benefit program that introduces new crew members to IKECA-recognized standards. It is a designation, not a certification, and IKECA prohibits promoting it as one.

IKECA describes the PECT as a recommended precursor to pursuing IKECA certification. In plain terms, it is an entry-level credential that exposes new employees to the standards IKECA recognizes, and employers are explicitly barred from marketing it as a certification. If a job posting or sales pitch calls the PECT a certification, that does not match IKECA's own rules.

One practical consequence matters to you as a candidate: the designation is tied to your employer. IKECA states the PECT is forfeited if you leave the sponsoring IKECA member company, or if that company loses its IKECA membership in good standing. Passing the exam earns you the designation while you work for the sponsor; it does not travel with you to a non-member employer.

There is also a financial bridge to certification. IKECA returns your paid PECT exam fee as a discount on the examination fee for any IKECA certification you pursue within one year of earning the designation.

Who can sit for the exam and how sponsorship works

Only employees of IKECA member companies can apply, and the sponsoring employer submits the application with a signed Code of Conduct form for each candidate. IKECA recommends at least 400 hours of work experience before sponsorship.

An authorized representative of your sponsoring employer completes the PECT Application form, pays the exam fee, and uploads a signed IKECA Code of Conduct form for each sponsored candidate. IKECA states that applications without the signed form for every candidate will not be processed. The program is available to employees of IKECA member companies, including Introductory Membership applicants.

The 400 hours of prior work experience is a recommendation, not a stated requirement. IKECA recommends candidates have a minimum of 400 hours on the job before being sponsored, so if you are brand new, discuss with your supervisor whether more field time would help first.

Once IKECA processes the paid application, it registers you for testing and emails confirmation. Employers also receive a PECT Examination Guide to use in training and discussion sessions before you sit the exam.

Exam format and how the online test works

The exam has 50 multiple-choice questions, is open book and non-proctored, and allows up to three hours of cumulative testing time across multiple sessions within a 90-day eligibility period.

Delivery runs through Meazure Learning's non-proctored test delivery system. After IKECA confirms your registration, you receive login instructions by email within about two business days. The exam is open book, meaning you may consult permitted reference materials while answering, and no proctor supervises you.

You may split the exam across as many sessions and logins as you want within 90 days of IKECA's confirmation email, but your cumulative time cannot exceed three hours. If your timer runs out, the exam auto-submits. Because the clock accumulates across sessions, each login consumes part of a single shared budget.

You receive a preliminary score report from Meazure Learning immediately after completing the exam, but the official result comes from IKECA, to you and your employer, within five business days. You need a minimum score of 70% to earn the designation, and a certificate accompanies the result letter for successful candidates.

Practice

IKECA lets you split the exam into multiple sessions, but cumulative time may not exceed 3 hours. Suppose you plan three sessions: a first session of 50 minutes for the first 20 questions, a second session of 75 minutes for the next 20 questions, and a final session for the last 10 questions. How much cumulative time remains for that final session before the exam auto-submits?

Show answer

55 minutes remain for the final session.

The three-hour cumulative cap equals 180 minutes. The first two sessions use 50 + 75 = 125 minutes. Remaining time is 180 − 125 = 55 minutes. The question count in this example is an assumption supplied for the exercise only; IKECA's pages do not allocate questions to sessions. The only rule you need is the sourced one: the cap applies to total accumulated time, not to each login.

What the exam covers and how to prepare

IKECA states the exam content is based primarily on NFPA Standard 96 and OSHA regulations, plus knowledge derived from field experience. Prepare through your employer's Examination Guide sessions and the standards your materials reference.

IKECA identifies NFPA Standard 96, OSHA regulations and field knowledge as the content basis. A detailed weighted topic list and a particular code edition have not been verified for this guide. Use the Examination Guide supplied to your employer to identify the relevant material. NFPA 96 is available from NFPA.

Your most targeted preparation resource is the PECT Examination Guide your employer receives with the confirmation email. IKECA encourages sponsoring employers to run training sessions where exam materials are reviewed, key issues are highlighted, and questions and answers are discussed. Ask your supervisor to schedule those sessions and use them to work through the reference documents.

Before your first session, practice finding the material covered in your employer’s preparation sessions. Organizing those references can help you use the cumulative time allowance effectively. That is study advice, not an additional IKECA requirement.

Fees, retakes, and keeping the designation

The exam fee is not refundable or transferable, unsuccessful candidates can be re-sponsored, and the designation runs on a three-year term ending June 1 — but it is forfeited if you leave the sponsoring company or the company loses good standing.

Your employer pays the fee through IKECA's online store after submitting the application, and the amount is not refundable or transferable, so confirm sponsorship is settled before any session is scheduled. Employers sponsoring more than five candidates at once submit additional application forms, and IKECA offers a fee discount when ten or more candidates are sponsored together.

If you do not reach the 70% passing score, you have not used up your chance permanently: IKECA allows unsuccessful candidates to be sponsored again as the employer deems appropriate. That makes your supervisor a key part of any retake plan.

The designation itself is awarded for a three-year term ending on June 1. Two conditions can end it early: leaving the employ of the sponsoring IKECA member company, or the company failing to maintain IKECA membership in good standing. Renewal information is handled through IKECA's designation pages.
